Description

In this seminar, the Interreg Baltic Sea Region together with the Central Baltic, South Baltic and Öresund Kattegat-Skagerrak Programmes will explore the needs of stakeholders in the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region (EUSBSR) for potential future Interreg programmes. Starting from the present budget of roughly EUR 280 million in EU funds for the Interreg Baltic Sea Region and the combined budget of EUR 250 million of the three cross-border programmes for a period of seven years, we aim to stimulate a debate on how these funds could be distributed for the benefit of the Baltic Sea Region. Four Panellists will present their proposals on how to ‘cut the cake’ and the audience will be invited to contribute to the debate. In so doing, the workshop aims to map the most pressing needs of stakeholders as a basis for future programme development.

Background: Interreg programmes have been funding European territorial cooperation in the Baltic Sea Region for two decades. In past years, the Interreg Baltic Sea Region has been the main financial source for the implementation of the activities of the EUSBSR: it has financed flagship projects, provided seed money for project development and supported the governance structure of the Strategy. Reports on post-2020 suggest that transnational Interreg programmes will assume broader responsibility for facilitating transnational cooperation beyond support for single projects, and for the benefit of macro-regional strategies. In addition, cross-border programmes have been important contributors to funding on many EUSBSR projects in different fields. Their support for EUSBSR implementation is expected to continue.
