Description

The HELCOM ‘State of the Baltic Sea’ report for 2017 shows that the goal of the Baltic Sea Action Plan (BSAP) and EUSBSR – the good ecological status of the sea – has yet to be achieved. Many of the actions of the BSAP have already been implemented by countries, but not all, and those which remain outstanding will have to be accomplished by 2021.

At the same time, the HELCOM Ministerial Meeting on 6 March decided to update the BSAP for the period beyond 2021.

The HELCOM seminar will focus on two general questions to be discussed by a panel:

  1. How does the currently poor status of the marine environment affect the achievement of other goals for the region?
  2. What issues should be considered in the process of updating the Baltic Sea Action Plan?

The current status in the accomplishment of BSAP actions per country (a new scorecard) will be presented by the WWF. The main outcomes of the HELCOM Ministerial Meeting and the ‘State of the Baltic Sea’ report will also provide background for the discussion.

The UN Sustainable Development Goals will provide a framework for consideration of a sustainable future, building on, among other things, the Baltic 2030 Action Plan endorsed by the Council of the Baltic Sea States as well as HELCOM and national work on the water- and marine-related targets of SDGs.
