Description

As a continuation of the 3rd Plenary, this seminar addresses eutrophication by asking the following questions:

  • What is the current state of Baltic Sea ecosystems?
  • What kind of progress and innovations have been made in the current programme period?
  • Can these innovations be widely applied, and what difference would they make?

HELCOM will present recent assessments of the eutrophication status of the Baltic Sea and nutrient loads. They will serve as a basis for discussing progress towards achieving the targets and actions that are still needed.

Solutions will be presented in short pitch-style presentations. These snapshots will review recent innovations that can contribute specifically to reducing eutrophication and thereby to the vision for the Baltic Sea in and beyond 2020, if applied across borders. Environmental and agricultural experts forming a panel of ‘dragons’ will comment on and ask questions about each of the presentations.

Additionally, the NutrinFlow project will present the results of the innovation competition for university students in drainage water management and nutrient retention.

The audience will be invited to participate by:

  • posing questions to the innovators;
  • declaring whether they are in (would invest in the idea) or out (do not believe in the viability of the idea); and
  • suggesting priorities for water protection.
